As we enter the busy holiday and Christmas season, I want to talk about how important self-care is. I’ve always heard/known that if you want to take care of others you must first take care of yourself. Just like on an airplane, you can’t help other people with their oxygen mask if you can’t breath. Taking care of yourself, and the one and only body you will ever get, is so important.
For me, part of self-care means making the time in my schedule to exercise, and make the extra effort to eat good, healthy food. This is only a portion of what I try to do though.
The thing I struggle with most is relaxing, and I don’t mean sitting on the couch binge-watching tv (that’s easy to do). No, I struggle with taking time for myself, shutting off technology, pampering myself, and reading a good book or devotional.
I have a hard time relaxing because I feel like there are always a million things I could be doing. There’s always laundry, dishes, dinner to cook, floors to vacuum, etc. I only live in a one-bedroom apartment; I couldn’t imagine what my to-do list would look like if I had a house. I’m sure so many of you are the same way. You struggle to recharge yourself like me.
We have to learn to take some time for ourselves though, so we can continue to do the millions of things we like to do and feel we have to do. The only way to do this is to make yourself a priority.
I try to spend some time a few times a month pampering myself and relaxing. I challenge you to do the same thing. Block out some time a few times a month or once a week for self-care.
Some things I like to do when I’m pampering myself is put on a face mask, give myself a manicure (Fave Fall Nail Colors here), and soak in the bath. While I’m soaking in the bath I like to read a book or listen to a podcast.
